tell me how you really feel

Sunday was a trying day for all of us. Each of the kids had an earache and Paige is again suffering the effects of allergy season. She becomes very irritable.

We tried to have a “family meeting” to discuss the upcoming Spring Break without much success. The kids were literally bouncing on the furniture. Who raised these children, anyway? We finally gave up and sent the kids upstairs to shower. That in itself was an ordeal.

I don’t even remember what provoked the whole thing, but Paige got particularly sassy. She screeched something at me as she got out of the shower, and I gave her a swat on her behind. I’m not a spanker. She must have definitely given me some sass to warrant such an action. [That, or my patience level was depleted.] Either way, it must have taken her bare bottom by surprise. She shrieked and eventually all the kids were sent to their rooms for a breather.

I did a couple of “peek-ins” just to make sure they weren’t destroying anything. As I checked in on Paige, she slid a piece of paper under the door.

It was a note to me:

Paige_Note_-_To_Mom

{to: mom 10:35 and 11:49 you are really mean today - tiny dots are eyes, dots are tears}

She also had something to say to Todd:

Paige_Note_-_To_Dad

{to: dad Mom is being really mean since 10:35 and 11:49 - me frowning at mom}

I love that she wants to speak out!

I love that she’s given herself a uni-brow in both pictures!

I love that she’s specific about the exact time that I was allegedly mean.

I love that she’s not afraid of getting another bare bottomed swat for telling me off! (she was sure to write the note before dressing – while her memory was untainted)

i {heart} tantrums

Paige's rant after being sent to her room:

P - (sticks tongue out - that's new) I DON'T LIKE YOU TODAY.

[3 gloriously quiet minutes go by]

[door opens]

P - AND I MIGHT NOT LIKE YOU TOMORROW..... OR THE NEXT DAY!

I'll keep everyone posted.

the turn-around

Tonight as we were starting our bedtime routine, Paige became a bit defiant.

Mommy: Paige, time to get in the bath.
Paige: I don't want to take a bath.
M: Okay, take a shower then.
P: No. I don't wanna take a shower either.
M: (sternly) Paige, you are taking a shower before you go to bed. Stop whining or you will not get to play tomorrow.
P: (lots of stomping, loud, shrill grunting and inaudible backtalk)
M: (fed up) You are NOT playing tomorrow
P: (more of the previously mentioned loveliness)
M: Are we going for TWO days now?
P: (complaining gets quieter, but not by much)
M: Maybe the whole weekend??
P: (begrudgingly heads upstairs with a huff)

I start preparing the bath for Gabriel and Paige is nowhere to be seen - she's gone to her room. About 5 minutes pass and a new Paige walks in the bathroom all smiles and sweetness.

M: Get in the shower, please.
new Paige: (sweetly) Okay mommy.
(pause)
nP: I was just kidding about before.
M: You mean about throwing a fit?
nP: Ya. It was just a joke.
M: (explanation of what kind of joke I actually find funny)

She pauses before getting into the shower and says coyly: So can I not be grounded anymore?

It's almost too cute not to work.

I said almost.

pleading

The other night Paige was being punished for something that she had been repeatedly warned about. It was near bed time anyway and her punishment was to go upstairs to her room and stay there.

The rest of us remained downstairs as she perched herself at the top of the stairs wailing loudly and complaining of the injustice of her punishment. Occasionally we'd call holler back with a "Go to bed", "Go to your room" or "That's enough Paige", but mostly we attempted to ignore her - hoping that eventually it would all just stop.

Her pleas to be released grew louder and more insistent. As she became more desperate, they also grew in hilarity. So later that night as Todd and I went to bed I got out a pen and paper and we recounted all the phrases she used in an attempt to convince us she needed to come downstairs.

  • Why am I up here?
  • This is the worstest day of my life!
  • I have my pj's on, can I come down now?
  • I'm thirsty! Can I get a drink?
  • I'm sick!
  • I can't take this anymore!!
  • My throat hurts...
  • my ears hurt...
  • my tummy hurts...
  • I think I'm gonna throw up!
  • I'm scared.
  • (wracking sobs) DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE GIRL!!??

and the one that finally worked on DADDY... drum roll please...

  • (sweetly, with sniffles) CAN I COME DOWN AND GIVE YOU A HUG AND A KISS?

Can anyone believe that he actually bought into that one??? I was dying...
